BINUH – UN mission in Haiti extended by nine-month

The United Nations Security Council has extended the UN mission in Haiti by nine-month Friday after an 11th-hour compromise was found between the western powers and China.
The United States and China were engaged in a standoff against Haiti in the UN Security Council. Negotiations for the annual extension of the political mission headed by Ms. La Lime (BINUH) did not go as planned.
Washington advocated a renewal of the mission’s mandate for one year. In contrast, Beijing was asking for an extension only for six months. In fact, “If tomorrow the Chinese could close the UN office in Haiti, they would… everything we invested was at a loss for this country,” commented one diplomat.
